Where were you 10 years ago?
It was a slow day. I was sitting in my dorm room on my computer chatting on the internet. Two days before my sister told me about the death of Aaliyah and I was telling her that it was a hoax. Then now she was telling me that she just heard on the news that the a plane crashed into the Twin Towers in New York. I remember telling her not to believe such things and it would be all over the news if it was.
I had my radio on in my room and it was playing music that was current at the time. We didn't have a TV in our student housing at the time. The only person that had a TV in her room was another housemate that I was not talking to at the time so I didn't think that it was THAT serious.
Then my friend Keith walked past my room and was asking if Tori, my housemate at the time was in. I told him she was sleeping as she had a full on day and was painting a little bit in the afternoon. I asked Keith wat was up and he said it's urgent that she comes to his place and watch the news.
Keith and I knocked on Tori's door to wake her up from sleep. When she opened the door, Keith told her that the Twin Towers was just hit by a commercial plane and they are suspecting that terrorist was behind the accident.
I will never forget what happened next, we got dressed and went to Keith's place to watch his TV. At that point in time, only one tower was hit by the plane. We sat there stunned and in shock. We didn't know what to say or feel. I was numb. It was like watching the scene from Independence Day. I saw people running for their lives, people crying, people feeling helpless. I felt helpless. I couldn't do anything. Not from 10,000 miles away. I was tearing. Tori who was sitting beside me was sobbing.
Then, as the journo was giving a play by play on what was going on, the second plane crashed into the second tower (I think there was a second plane, I can't really remember what went on). I had goosebumps. Tori was saying "Oh my God" over and over again. I was in tears. I couldn't believe I was witnessing this horrific event.
After what felt like eternity, we saw the towers came tumbling down. I thought the world would come to an end there an then. Millions of people's life would feel the impact on this day. Thousands of lives were lost unnecessarily and one man and his army were blamed for everything that was going on. Even though this man said he did it in the name of religion, I didn't think that religion had ANYTHING to do with something this heinous and barbaric.
Today, I will say a little prayer for all the lives that was lost on this day 10 years ago, all the people that have been left behind, all the children that grew up never knowing either one or both their parents and to all man kind. May we be rid of anything and everything that is evil on this day no matter what religion we are and who we belive in.
